Introduction:
Our recent journey to Alappuzha, or Alleppey, unfolded as an unconventional escape, deviating from the typical tourist script. Over five laid-back days, our primary objective was simple – to unwind and absorb the tranquil ambiance of this coastal gem. Nestled at Zostel, adjacent to Alleppey Beach, we immersed ourselves in a leisurely stay, deliberately eschewing traditional sightseeing for a truly unique experience.
Chilling by the Beach:
Evenings brought us to Alleppey Beach, where we marveled at picturesque sunsets, painted in hues of orange and pink. Local cafes became our nightly haunts, introducing us to the authentic flavors of the region. Yet, the highlight of our mornings was undoubtedly the “Breakfast Village,” offering delectable meals and impeccable service that left a lasting imprint on our memories.
Embracing FOMO: The Houseboat Adventure:
Fueled by a touch of FOMO, we decided to venture beyond our chill routine. Opting for a houseboat ride, we initially considered a night stay package, which included dinner and, optionally, lunch. However, the restriction on staying overnight in the backwaters prompted us to reconsider. Given that boats had to dock (likely at Kumarakom) during the night, we deemed the experience not worth the investment of both money and time.
Marari Beach and a Tranquil Finale:
To quell our lingering FOMO, we explored Marari Beach, a vibrant yet cleaner alternative to Alleppey Beach. Concluding our trip on a serene note, we treated ourselves to revitalizing full-body Ayurvedic massages at Vedha Ayurvedic & Homestay. The hot oil and Potli massages, complemented by charming sauna boxes, left us feeling rejuvenated, despite the limited shampoo and body wash supply.
Insights and Lessons:
In hindsight, we discovered that opting for a night stay on the houseboat could be a great deal, providing dinner on the boat and optional lunch. However, the constraint on overnight stays in the backwaters influenced our decision, leading us to forgo this option.
Additionally, our quest for authentic coffee souvenirs proved to be a misstep. Although Alleppey is a gem in many culinary aspects, coffee isn’t its forte. Our attempt to bring home coffee beans was met with disappointment, highlighting the importance of local knowledge in recognizing quality coffee.
Conclusion:
Our Alappuzha escapade emerged as a testament to the beauty found in simplicity and the joy of exploring the uncharted facets of a destination. By embracing a leisurely pace and veering away from the typical tourist path, we uncovered hidden gems and forged memories that will forever define our unconventional Alappuzha experience.
